Artist Statement

Working as a multidisciplinary artist, I explore both the diversity and universality of growth. I apply the study of psychology and explore emotional, physical, cognitive, and social aspects of human growth; in my pieces, To Reach the Top and Broken but Beautiful, for example, I examine how individuals experience development differently. To Reach the Top is a ceramic piece exploring the levels of psychological growth's layers and individuality. Each ring in the tower symbolizes the levels of growth needed to reach an individual's full potential for development. Broken but Beautiful explores personal growth as being broken in appearance, yet whole and beautiful through the medium of stained-glass.
Nature versus nurture has long been debated on which influences the journey of growth more. Do biological elements in our DNA or heritage bring us closer in development? Does the love we feel from those around us increase the rate at which we develop? Personal growth comes from individual experiences which affect the side that plays a larger role in development. I make work to explore concepts which can be overwhelming or that have various answers. Exploring the various stages and rates of growth provides knowledge of its versatility used for progression.
